I am always looking for ways to minimize my time in the kitchen since RA and fibromyalgia ensure that I have only a limited number of pain-free steps and movements each day.
There’s certainly no shame in automating our meal preparation processes to reduce the time and to make the time we do spend in the kitchen more comfortable and productive.
I would like to share 8 ways in which I make my life in the kitchen much easier. Some of these may work well for you.
Cook extra food (when you are feeling well) to freeze. Advocates of “freezer meals” swear by this method of intense cooking and storing entire meals in the freezer. This website gives you step by step instructions for making 46 meals in 4 hours.
Use flash frozen fruits & vegetables to save time. Flash frozen fruits and veggies can be more healthful than FRESH ones. Surprised? So was I. Flash freezing preserves both the nutritional value and the taste of foods and can enhance both. The bonus is that you don’t have to wash, dry, chop or otherwise prepare the items prior to cooking.
Keep your kitchen well-organized and stocked. There’s nothing worse than being in the midst of preparing a recipe and realizing you don’t have enough of something or that you are missing a common ingredient. Keeping a well-organized, stocked kitchen can help you to avoid these situations. This site gives you a listing of what any kitchen should have on hand.
Buy pre-washed fresh veggies when possible. There are plenty of pre-washed vegetables you can buy in individual servings or in larger portions. This is a fantastic way to save some time and spare some of your energy.
Purchase a bar stool for your kitchen and use it! If you sit down, your time in the kitchen will be much more comfortable with less pain and fatigue. A bar stool will place you at the perfect height for doing work at the counter or sink.
Don’t forget about adaptive kitchen equipment. Whether it’s simply an electric can opener or mixer or some adaptive items such as these, gadgets can make food preparation a much smoother process.
Seek out simple recipes with very few ingredients. There are plenty of recipes for delicious entrees and side dishes that feature 5 ingredients or less. What a tasty way to save time!
Invest in a slow cooker. I love my Crock Pot! I toss in some ingredients, and it does all the work for me. Here are some ideas from the Crock Pot website.
I’m confident these suggestions will help you reduce your time spent on food preparation and increase your level of comfort. If you have any helpful tips or simple recipes, please share them in the comments section below.
May all your Sundays be SAVORY!
